Our Blade Services

Wind turbines are located in areas with varying harsh weather conditions, leading to problems such as blade erosion. In Vietnam’s tropical monsoon climate, the level of damage is even higher. Without appropriate preventative measures and solutions, these gradual changes will negatively impact the structural durability and lifespan of the blades, thereby reducing annual electricity output (AEP).

MBWIND provides extensive expertise in a range of efficient wind turbine blade services and repairs, including structural, complex, and aesthetic repairs. Utilizing MBWIND’s highly trained technicians, we not only ensure the highest level of expertise but also respond quickly to save our customers time and reduce costs due to lost output.

Wind turbine blade repair is considered one of the most important and costly maintenance and repair processes in wind power operation and maintenance. So what is wind turbine blade repair? What are the reasons for repairing wind turbine blades? What are the common types of damage encountered during wind turbine blade repair? What is the wind turbine blade repair process? What are the repair methods for different types of damage?

Repairing wind turbine blades is much cheaper than replacing them. Currently, many technologies are applied in the blade repair process, significantly reducing costs and speeding up the process, allowing investors to resume operations sooner.

MB Wind Power Services Company was established as an optimal solution for wind power projects. We provide comprehensive, efficient, fast, and cost-effective turbine blade inspection and repair services for onshore and offshore wind power projects throughout Vietnam and the region.

To ensure safety, quick repair times, and cost savings for our customers, we utilize work platforms during blade repairs.

For wind turbine blade repair projects, we typically proceed as follows:

Our blade repair services include:

  • Regular blade repair
  • Renovation installation
  • Lightning strike and manufacturing defects
  • Lead edge protection system (LEP) installation
  • LPS inspection, repair, and replacement
  • Complex blade repair
  • OEM manufacturing support at the factory
  • Quality inspection/quality control (QA/QC) for blade defects from factory to site
  • Cost-effective blade inspection solutions

Our blade repair process

Turbine Blade Damage Inspection and Analysis

This is the first and most important step in assessing the damage status of a wind turbine.

MBWIND inspects the turbine’s condition by observing changes in the blade surface, corrosion, cracks, or deformation caused by other factors. Alternatively, non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are applied to accurately assess the condition and analyze the damage level using data on: cracks, paint thickness, weld condition, corrosion testing, hardness and thickness measurements, material thickness measurements, etc. From this, the cause and type of damage are determined.

Wind Turbine Blade Repair Planning

Based on the analysis and conclusions of the assessment process, we begin to develop a detailed plan for wind turbine blade repair. The wind power equipment repair plan may include repair diagrams, necessary equipment (available or requiring additional equipment), contingency plans for unforeseen issues, expected repair results, and the cost to complete the blade repair project.

MBWIND is committed to transparency in every planning stage, outlining solutions for potential problems and comprehensively protecting customer rights.

Wind Turbine Blade Repair Process

After completing the preparation phase, we begin repairing the wind turbine blades according to the extent of damage and specific technical methods, such as: painting, repairing defects, cracks, reinforcing, refurbishing and restoring the blades to their original operating condition.

MBWIND is committed to carrying out wind turbine blade repair work according to scientific and technical standards, ensuring safety conditions and completing the work on schedule.

Inspection, Reporting, and Monitoring After Turbine Blade Repair

To ensure no problems occur, we conduct acceptance testing of the repaired turbine blades, comparing them to the initial plan. Once we are certain there are no remaining defects, we hand over the completed wind turbine blades, along with a warranty and follow-up on the condition of the repaired blades.

In addition, MBWIND also provides services for inspecting and analyzing the condition of turbine blades, maintenance, refurbishment, and repair of turbine blades and other wind turbine components and equipment.

Types of damage to knife blades and how to repair them

Repairing Corroded Wind Turbine Blades

Leading edge erosion, especially in offshore wind turbines, is a common problem. This is a major cause of a more than 5% reduction in annual wind turbine power output, due to increased drag and reduced balance of the blades.

Depending on the severity of the erosion, MBWIND applies various methods using paints or protective coatings to resist corrosion and weather elements such as rain, wind, humidity, and temperature. These include polyurethane coatings, organic-inorganic sol-gels, or epoxy-polyurethane coatings supported by nanoparticles.

MBWIND provides services to reinforce, restore, and repair corroded wind turbine blades using the most advanced technologies, effectively restoring aerodynamic efficiency and ensuring the performance of onshore and offshore wind turbines.

Repairing Cracked Turbine Blades and Cosmetic Damage

One type of non-structural damage to the composite material of turbine blades is cracking, delamination, debonding, or other surface physical damage. Depending on the severity of the damage, MBWIND repairs cracked turbine blades using filling and sealing methods (“dill & fill”).

With this solution, we clarify the damage, inject reinforcing materials into the defect, usually special resins, with the assistance of a manual injection gun or pneumatic press. The injected material may cure in a few hours or even a day, at ambient temperature or at higher temperatures depending on the chemical properties of the substances used.

MBWIND always ensures fast, effective repair of cracked turbine blades, without damaging the material fibers or affecting the overall structure of the wind turbine blade. Ensure that the direct causes leading to larger cracks, separations, moisture seepage, and fan blade breakage are prevented.

Turbine Blade Repair for Serious Structural Defects

Structural defects in wind turbine blades are common when the composite fibers are damaged, leaving large defects, stepped shapes, tapered holes, deep cracks, etc. MBWIND typically applies plug/patch and scarf repair methods to restore the turbine blade to its original condition.

After cleaning and clearly identifying the damaged surface, we proceed with patching and repairing the turbine blade. The patching solutions usually involve: a strip of composite fiber impregnated and cut to a fixed shape, then glued in multiple layers using adhesive.

MBWIND is committed to completely repairing and rectifying all types of defects and damage quickly, reinforcing the technical structure, and closely monitoring the condition of the turbine blade after repair.
